I AM Statements of Jesus: The Door that Stays Open

What does it mean to find our way home? That question sits at the heart of one of the most familiar passages in all of Scripture, John 14, where Jesus tells his disciples that he is the way, the truth, and the life. But here is something worth sitting with: Jesus did not say these words at a funeral. He said them at dinner, surrounded by frightened friends who had no idea how drastically their world was about to change. When we hear these words in their original context, something shifts. This is not a verse meant to be read over a casket. It is a word spoken into a room full of people who are confused, afraid, and on the verge of losing the one they love most. And that means it is also a word spoken directly into our own moments of confusion and fear. The promise Jesus makes is not primarily about celestial real estate or the scenery of heaven. It is about presence. Where I am, you will be also. Home, in the deepest sense, is not a location. It is being with God. And the one who leads us there does not simply point us down the road. He is the road. That distinction changes everything about how we understand our faith and how we walk it out together.
