Steps: More Church Than Church
What if the most powerful discipleship tool outside the Bible has been hiding in plain sight, practiced not in sanctuaries but in basement meeting rooms under fluorescent lights? This message invites us to take an honest look at ourselves through the lens of the 12 steps, not as outsiders observing a recovery program, but as people who recognize our own need for surrender, honesty, reconciliation, and restoration. Drawing from Proverbs 3:5-6, where we are called to trust God rather than lean on our own understanding, and Romans 7:15, where Paul names the painful gap between what we want to do and what we actually do, we are challenged to stop asking whether we need to surrender something and start asking what we need to surrender. The truth is that every one of us is managing a dependency of some kind, whether it is the need for control, approval, resentment we refuse to release, or the exhausting belief that everything depends on us. The four movements of surrender, honesty, reconciliation, and restoration are not recovery concepts borrowed by the church. They are the heartbeat of Christian discipleship, and this series invites us to reclaim them as our own.
